Understanding Waterproof ratings which are measured in millimetres (mm) and usually fall anywhere from 2000mm to 10,000 mm. The figure denoted indicates the amount of water pressure a fabric can withstand. That means a jacket with a 5,000mm rating will endure 5,000mm or a two metre column of water bearing down on it before it starts to leak.
10,000mm is our go to standard for Waterproof jackets on this page - which will in most cases mean a jacket also has taped (overlapping) seams.
2,000mm we regard as showerproof. 3,000mm is showerproof and the material outer is likely to feature water repellent features. 5,000mm is waterproof for a shorter time than a 10,000nmm rated jacket and will serve a purpose for a shopping trip, tramping around town.
