Understanding Waterproof ratings which are measured in millimetres (mm) and usually fall anywhere from 2000mm to 10,000 mm. The figure denoted indicates the amount of water pressure a fabric can withstand. That means a jacket with a 5,000mm rating will endure 5,000mm or a two metre column of water bearing down on it before it may start to leak or absorb.
10,000mm is our go to standard for Waterproof jackets on this page - which will in most cases mean a jacket also has taped (overlapping) seams. Duration of waterproofing would be 3-5 hours depending on how torrential the rain.
20,000mm - 25,000mm is locked in waterproof - Duration of being out in rain all day would suggest a 20,000mm + rating required - this will withstand 6-10 hours. It varies by brand/manufacturer and the test types they have undertaken to gain certification for the rating provided.
